Google Search: To use numbering in XP, first define a style for each level of numbering you want. You will need nine of each (actually, you do not need any more than one more than the number of levels you intend to use, but to keep it simple I will assume that each list is being defined with nine levels). If you use the built-in styles, half the work is done for you. In a document, the styles won't appear unless you have used them in the document, so set your Task Pane to "All Styles".
